MgF2 / Variable Retarder / Polarization Phase Compensation

MgF2 Single-Crystal Adjustable Wedge Compensator Optics

Custom birefringent wedge and compensator elements for Soleil-Babinet polarization phase compensator assemblies. Crystal-axis orientation, wedge geometry, relative motion, retardance range, clear aperture, coating and inspection are reviewed against each customer design.

Optical elements for a variable phase compensator

A Soleil-Babinet compensator is a continuously adjustable polarization retarder. Its variable retardance is produced by translating one birefringent wedge relative to another, while a compensator plate provides the opposing phase contribution required by the optical design.

For MgF2 components, crystal-axis orientation, wedge angle and direction, element relationship and mechanical travel must be defined as one optical system. Junbang manufactures the single-crystal wedge and plate elements to customer drawings for integration into the customer's adjustable compensator assembly.

Engineering points reviewed before manufacture

  • Crystal-axis callout and its relationship to the finished optical and mechanical datums.
  • Wedge direction, angular tolerance and the relative travel of the movable and fixed wedge elements.
  • Fast-axis relationship between the wedge pair and compensator plate.
  • Edge geometry, chamfers, reference marks and handling provisions for instrument assembly.
  • Acceptance criteria for surface quality, transmitted wavefront or flatness, clear aperture and phase performance.

Polarization phase compensation applications

MgF2 Soleil-Babinet compensator optics are used where continuously variable retardance is required, including polarization-state generation or analysis, ellipsometry, spectroscopy, laser instrumentation and optical calibration. The usable wavelength range and retardance span depend on the complete design, material grade, wedge geometry and crystal-axis definition.
